SchoolMessenger 📞 Phone Calls Not Being Received

Summary

If parents report that SchoolMessenger phone calls are not being received, the most common cause is that the school phone number has been flagged as spam by wireless carriers. When this happens, calls may be blocked, sent directly to voicemail, or labeled as “Spam Likely” on parents’ phones.

This issue is carrier-level, not a SchoolMessenger outage.

Symptoms

Parents or guardians may report one or more of the following:

  • No phone call received, but email/text notifications work
  • Calls go straight to voicemail
  • Caller ID shows “Spam Likely” or similar
  • Issue affects multiple families across different schools
  • Issue is more common on mobile phones than landlines

Root Cause

SchoolMessenger calls originate from automated dialing services. Over time, these numbers can be:

  • Marked as spam by parents
  • Added to carrier spam databases
  • Blocked due to STIR/SHAKEN verification failures
  • Associated with upstream providers (e.g., Aerial Communications, later acquired by T-Mobile)

Once flagged, major carriers may suppress or block the calls entirely.

Technical Background (for IT/Admins)

  • STIR/SHAKEN
A caller-ID authentication framework used by carriers to verify legitimate calling numbers and reduce robocalls.
  • SPID (Service Provider ID)
Identifies the originating telecom provider. If a provider or number has a poor reputation score, calls may be blocked.

Even legitimate school calls can be caught by these systems.

Resolution (What Worked)

The issue was resolved by registering and verifying the school’s calling number with major carrier spam-tracking services and responding to verification requests.

Required Action

Submit the SchoolMessenger calling phone number to the following services:

⚠️ Important: Some services require email verification or follow-up confirmation. Monitor inboxes carefully after submission.

Newer Option (More Streamlined)

There is now a centralized registry that may simplify this process:

đź”— Free Caller Registry: https://freecallerregistry.com/fcr/

This service allows organizations to register legitimate calling numbers across multiple carriers at once. While promising, it has not yet been tested in our environment.

Expected Timeline

  • Verification responses may take several days
  • Full propagation across carriers can take 1–2 weeks
  • Parents may need to manually remove the number from their personal block list

What Parents Can Do (Temporary Workaround)

If calls are urgent while remediation is in progress, parents can:

  • Check voicemail settings
  • Remove the school number from their phone’s spam or blocked list
  • Save the school number as a contact
  • Rely on email/text notifications in the interim
